When investing £1,500-3,000 in a laptop, resale value should be part of your buying decision. Some laptops retain 70% of their value after a year, while others drop to 30%.
1. MacBook Pro (Apple Silicon) — The undisputed king. A MacBook Pro M3 Pro bought for £2,200 resells for £1,500-1,750 after one year (70-80%). Reasons: exceptional macOS support (5-7 years), integrated Apple ecosystem, premium build quality.
2. Razer Blade — The 'MacBook of gaming' retains 55-65%. Premium aluminium unibody design and OLED/Mini-LED 240Hz screens. Watch for battery condition — Razer's historical weak point.
3. Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon — IBM's heir retains 50-60%. MIL-STD-810H certified reliability, best keyboard on the market, native Linux compatibility. ThinkPads sell quickly.
4. Dell XPS 15/16 — The premium Windows alternative retains 45-55%. InfinityEdge OLED screen and CNC aluminium build. Versions with dedicated NVIDIA GPU hold value better.
5. Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 — The best performance/portability ratio retains 45-55%. Unique 14-inch format in the high-end gaming segment.
Honourable mentions: MSI Raider GE78 HX (40-50%), HP Spectre x360 (40-50%), Asus ProArt Studiobook (45-55%).
Conversely, laptops that depreciate fastest: entry-level HP Pavilion, Chromebooks, and budget gaming PCs with low-end GPUs lose 50-70% in a year.
Storage and RAM play a major role. Laptops with 32GB RAM and 1TB+ SSD retain proportionally better value because growing software needs keep them relevant longer.
Screens are increasingly important. A Razer Blade 16 with OLED 240Hz display resells for significantly more than the same spec with an IPS 165Hz panel.
The smart buying tip: investing in high-end is often more economical long-term. A MacBook Pro M4 Pro bought for £2,200 and resold for £1,600 after 18 months costs you £600 to use (£33/month). An £700 laptop resold for £200 costs £500 (£28/month). Minimal monthly difference, incomparable experience.
Pixbounce buys all laptops: MacBook, gaming PCs (Razer, Asus ROG, MSI), professional ultraportables (ThinkPad, XPS, EliteBook) and creative workstations.
Three reasons: macOS updates for 5-7 years extend useful life, the Apple ecosystem creates captive demand, and premium build quality reduces second-hand defects.
Only high-end: Razer Blade, Asus ROG Zephyrus, MSI Titan. Mid-range gaming PCs lose 50-70% in a year.
Within 12-18 months of purchase, before the next generation launches. For Macs, sell before Apple keynotes (June, October).
